My Daughter’s Swim Hair Routine: How We Protect Her Curls From Chlorine Damage
Aubrey made the swim team this past year and that is the most amazing news. We are beyond proud of her! But with more time in the pool comes more chlorine… and with more chlorine comes dry, brittle hair.
Naturally, I made a trip to Ulta Beauty to look for products that would keep baby girl’s curls moisturized and healthy. Between multiple practices a week and swim meets that can last an entire weekend, we needed products that could truly handle the job.
I came across two products that absolutely lived up to the challenge: the CURLSMITH Strength Recipe Multi-Tasking Conditioner and the CURLSMITH Moisture Recipe Weightless Air Dry Cream.
After thoroughly shampooing Aubrey’s hair and rinsing the shampoo out, I apply a generous amount of the Multi-Tasking Conditioner. I use a detangling brush to gently work through her curls and let the conditioner sit for about 5–10 minutes before rinsing it out.
Once the conditioner is rinsed, I use a microfiber towel to remove as much excess water as possible. Then I take about two quarter-sized amounts of the Weightless Air Dry Cream, rub it between my hands, and finger-comb the product evenly throughout her hair. After that, I section her hair into two braids to help prevent tangling.
Between the chlorine and the multiple wash days each week, these two products have truly helped maintain Aubrey’s moisture and curls. I use very little heat on her hair overall. The only times I blow dry her hair are when I’m doing a braided style or if we’re heading out somewhere and I need to remove excess water. Even then, I avoid using a comb attachment and simply blow dry her curls as they are after detangling.
Finding a routine that protects her curls while still keeping things simple has made swim season so much easier for both of us.
